Alpacas – wear them or eat them?
Up to now the alpaca industry has been founded on buying and selling animals. But with the price of animals falling and fleece returns not even covering shearing costs, the industry has some tough questions to answer including how a stud industry can be transformed into a commercial industry in which large numbers of animals deliver the economies of scale to produce a profitable fleece and meat sector - and most importantly how this can be achieved before people begin to walk away from alpacas in disgust. John Pittard from Currabungla Alpacas believes we should be wearing alpacas or eating them and it’s up to every alpaca owner to develop their own value added markets.
"The information on Farm Radio is always very helpful, informative, covers a range of topics and is especially useful for people like me who are part-time farmers. I especially like the CD version of the programs which I play in my car when driving to my property."
