Finishing Livestock for Sale
On an earlier Farm Radio program (How to fat score your livestock) we found out how livestock are "scored" for muscle and fat content. Buyers use this scoring language to help them compare livestock.
Score 3 is generally a good all round animal not too fat and not too thin. Score 2 or 1 has less condition, while Score 4 or 5 may have too much condition.
Getting livestock to the point of sale is called "finishing" and on this program we speak with a major cattle buyer, Bob Watts and a renowned "finisher", farmer Lex Maas, to understand their perspectives on finishing livestock for sale.
