Growing Christmas Trees on a Small Farm

In Tasmania, many farmers use less productive areas of their farms to grow radiata pine or hardwood trees for the timber industry.

The effect is a number of small tree plantations, often only one hectare in size, dotted around the farm. (Usually around the 4 corners of the paddock where the centre pivot irrigator can't reach.)

The same principle of small woodlots scattered around the farm can apply on the mainland and one timber product that may suit small farmers is Christmas Trees.

The return per hectare of land appears quite good, but as you will hear it's not a matter of plant and forget.
