Growing Lavender in Australia

Small lavender farms

Most lavender farms in Australia are established on relatively small acreages. You don’t need a lot of room to go lavender farming in Australia. In fact, many lavender farms don’t take up more than 5 acres.

Most lavender is grown in Australia for its essential oil which is then combined with cosmetics and sold either at markets, from the farm gift shop or at selected local outlets.

Many lavender farmers have a tourist facility attached to their farms. Lavender farmers readily admit that it is very hard to make a full time living from small scale lavender farms. Therefore most successful lavender farms are on the “tourist map” usually fairly close to a major town or situated on a road between two major towns.

Harvesting lavender on a small farm can be hot work as it is done, mostly by hand, in the middle of Summer.

But the satisfaction that comes from being a lavender farmer is high as it combines down and dirty gardening, garden sculpting, product manufacturing and of course meeting lots of like-minded people who are interested in what you are doing.
